Medieforskningen har noen blinde eller halvblinde flekker, og det gjelder også mediehistorien. Mye forskning er innholdsanalyse eller studier av eierskap, rammevilkår og marked samt teknologiske endringer. Når aktørene trekkes inn, er det gjerne journalistprofesjonens kjernetropper det fokuseres på. Det arbeidet som tradisjonelt er blitt lagt ned i redigerings- og presentasjonsleddet, av ansatte som verken skriver sakene eller tar bildene, har vi langt mindre kunnskap om. Men det er gjerne her vinkling i titler og ingress finner sted, samt annen redigering og kutting i teksten, for ikke å snakke om valg av bilder og bidrag til å sette sammen stoffmiksen – i det hele tatt det som skaper avisens ansikt utad. Vi snakker om redigererne, og den øvrige desken. Deskens arbeid er riktignok innvevd i en rekke andre spørsmål man kan stille til et mediemateriale, men det går likevel gjerne under radaren hos medieforskerne.
